Federal Tax Deadline is now April 17th

Due to a legal holiday on April 16th in the District of Columbia, the IRS has announced that April 17th is the filing/payment deadline nationwide for federal taxes.  Under the timely filing/payment rule, holidays observed in the District of Columbia are treated as legal holidays.

The holiday was signed into law in 2005 and commemorates the day that President Abraham Lincoln signed an act ending slavery within the District of Columbia, nine months before he issued his Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.
