Accouting’s Finest: Members of a Profession Seldom in the Limelight Get Their Due

by Drew Ruble

Experienced CPAs are vital to a business’ growth and success. From business plan to succession strategy, they have a hand in every aspect of a business’ life cycle. And for public companies in a post-Sarbanes-Oxley world, they are more crucial than ever.

Despite this, accountants, especially the good ones, remain relatively invisible. Unfortunately, unless there’s a scandal of Enron-ic proportions, members of this profession maintain a relatively low profile. As a result, this is a list of “best in field” that is a bit more difficult to compile than the others Nashville Post will present in the coming year.

Not surprisingly, Ernst & Young is well represented, as the firm audits nearly two dozen Nashville companies who are SEC registrants. The list is also admittedly male-dominated – an indictment of the profession’s slow-turning gears more so than any bias on our behalf.

This peer-review list encompasses practicing accountants from traditional to niche players, meaning from members of the Big Four firms serving the needs of big public companies to more entrepreneurial firms providing key tax and other services that help build companies big and small. It also includes a few individuals who are not practicing accountants but whose influence on the profession is profound.

Thanks to the following list, these professionals will have to tolerate a higher profile than usual.

Tom Aaron, Tennessee Managing Partner, Deloitte & Touche

Vic Alexander, Chief Manager, Kraft CPAs

Wynne E. Baker, Member/Partner, Kraft CPAs

Edward H. Braman, Partner, Ernst & Young

Sam Bumpus, Partner, Carr Riggs & Ingram

Mike Cain, Co-managing Partner, LBMC

Lucy R. Carter, Partner, Carter Lankford

David Costello, President & CEO, NASBA

Dell Crosslin, Managing Partner, Crosslin & Associates

Kevin Crumbo, Member in Charge, Kraft CPAs

Robert Davidson, Co-founder/Managing Partner, Davidson Golden & Lundy

Sam B. DeVane, Managing Partner, Ernst & Young

Jerry W. Faulkner, Owner, Faulkner Mackie & Cochran

Jane B. Finley, Belmont University and Deloitte & Touche

Charles E. Frasier, Founding Partner, Frasier Dean & Howard

John T. Gawaluck, Audit Partner, Ernst & Young

Randy R. Laszewski, Office Managing Partner, KPMG

David K. Morgan, Co-managing Partner, LBMC

Larry Morton, Executive, Crowe Horwath

Michael Musick, Partner, BDO Seidman

John O. Pearce, TN tax practice leader, Ernst & Young

Sid Pilson, Personal Financial Planning Specialist, LBMC

Rick Swafford, Member in charge, RM Wolff

Mike Vaden, President, Decosimo/Vaden

Troy Waugh, CEO, Waugh & Co.

ABC recognized Brindley Construction's work with the Pyramid Award. Congratuations!

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced that Brindley Construction’s work on the First National Bank of Pulaski, has earned the company a Pyramid Award in the Renovation – less than $4 million category of ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards. Brindley Construction’s representatives received the award February 4 during the 20th annual Excellence in Construction Awards celebration in San Diego, Calif.

“ABC congratulates Brindley Construction for its exceptional work on the First National Bank of Pulaski,” said Kirk Pickerel, ABC president and CEO. “This project is an outstanding example of the innovation and commitment to superior craftsmanship that embody merit shop construction. It is a pleasure to honor this project with one of the association’s construction excellence awards.”

The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition, developed to honor innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects and safety programs. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. Accepting the award were Mark Hays of First National Bank and Ronnie Brindley of Brindley Construction, LLC. In accepting the award, Ronnie stated “It was an honor to have had the opportunity to complete the beautiful renovation of the historic First National Bank. First National has been a cornerstone of our community as well as an integral part of our company’s success. The teamwork between First National Bank, Fuqua and Associates, Architect and the Brindley team was an important part of winning this award.

A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year’s panel included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Surety & Fidelity Association of America, The American Institute of Architects and representatives from higher education, among others.

Congratulations Moss-Marlow on both of your successes!

Moss-Marlow Celebrates 100 Years in Business!

Throughout 2009 and now into the new decade, Moss-Marlow is celebrating 100 years of building in Catawba and surrounding counties.

Experience, stability and their rich heritage are key reasons why Moss-Marlow continues to build and prosper. More than half of their employees have worked for the company for over 10 years. This dedicated workforce includes field personnel as well as office personnel and officers.

In 2007, after operating from their South Center Street location in Hickory for 98 years, the company purchased, renovated and relocated to an existing property located at 3039 Hwy. 70 Southwest.

Todd Rhodes succeeded Don Moss as president of Moss-Marlow in 2004. When people ask Todd how business is, he is quick to say, “We are thankful! Thankful for great customers, thankful for great employees, subcontractors and suppliers, and thankful to be a part of a company that was founded on strong conservative building principles that have enabled us to weather storms such as the current economic challenges.”

Today their focus is shared equally among commercial and residential projects with personnel dedicated to both construction disciplines. Quality workmanship and customer service are keys to longevity in this business.

Chamber Presents “Faith in the Future” Award

Moss-Marlow was presented the 2009 Faith in the Future Award by the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce during their annual membership meeting held at the Hickory Metro Convention Center. This award is presented annually to businesses that make significant investments in their company which positively impact the area’s economy. Moss-Marlow was recognized for their new facility and for being in business in Catawba County for 100 years!

What is an Accredited Quality Contractor (AQC)?

The national Association of Builders & Contractors has a rigorous set of standards and qualifications that must be met before a company is awarded AQC status.

Brindley adhered to those standards and met those qualifications or in many cases exceed them and was awarded AQC status in 2009.

The Accredited Quality Contractor Program was launched in 1993 by the national Associated Builders & Contractors association. It is an accreditation program which publicly recognizes and honors those construction firms which have documented their commitment in four key areas of corporate responsibility:

•	Safety (Step Gold or Platinum Level Required)
•	Employee Benefits
•	Training
•	Community Relations

Brindley Construction has been building a reputation for integrity, innovation and quality in the construction industry for fifty years, the AQC designation is a public recognition and acknowledgement of their success.

The AQC Pledge

“As an Accredited Quality Contractor, our company is committed to providing our clients with the highest quality construction services and we care deeply about our employees and the communities in which we build. We are proud to be part of the construction industry and are dedicated to the principle of free enterprise. We commit ourselves to serve our communities and to provide our employees with the skills they need to work safely and productively in order to meet the needs of our clients.”

Kent Wood of PTS of America, LLC named Entrepreneur of the Year!

Congratulations to Kent Wood of Prisoner Transportation Services, LLC on being named one of nine “2010 Entrepreneurs of the Year” by Nashville’s City Paper. See excerpt below or click here for the full article.

After joining two start-up companies that went belly up, Kent Wood said he was really trying to figure out where to go next with his career in 2003.

“I had a business mentor who had owned and sold his own business and was successful, and we decided to look for a company to buy together,” he said.

Wood spent six months searching for a company when he found PTS, a prisoner extradition company that transports inmates for state and local agencies. They bought the company in September 2003 and Wood said he knew the timing was right.

“We felt like it was a small company in a niche business industry without a lot of competition, and it had a lot of room for growth,” he said.

The fact that it was recession-proof was icing on the cake.

“We deal with government clients and as budgets are constrained, they do more and more outsourcing,” he said. “We’re focused on one thing, and we can do it better and save them money.”

Apparently, they’ve been doing something right. When Wood and his partner bought the company, PTS did less than $1 million in revenue. It has since grown 13-fold, doubling in 2008 alone. One of the keys to the company’s growth has been access to capital.

“With good capital, you can hire good people and provide good service,” he said.

Wood has more big expansion plans for 2010: The company employed 100 in 2008 and plans to bump that up to 125 this year.

The rising sentiment against illegal immigration is helping to grow a new line of business for PTS — transporting airplane loads of deportees back to their home countries and continents. As one of the largest international transporters of detainees, PTS flies inmates to Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Africa.
