| Greg Alford is an audit partner at Davidson, Golden & Lundy and has been with the firm for twelve years. He provides audit and tax services to contractors and construction-related entities. His clients primarily include heavy equipment, highway and bridge contractors; contractors in the electrical, mechanical, plumbing and roofing trades; and general contractors and residential developers. He also has extensive experience with quarry and mining operations.
In addition to Greg's traditional accounting and tax services, he has recently been involved in multiple mergers and acquisitions in the construction and aggregate business. He has developed expertise in asset allocation, tax saving strategies and maximizing cash flow for both parties in the negotiation.
One of Greg’s specialties is helping contractors establish internal accounting systems for monthly and annual reporting. During this process, he helps clients set up systems to properly record job and equipment costs, depreciation and contract schedules. Greg assists his clients in billing strategies to help maximize cash flow. He analyzes federal and state income tax reporting methods in order to select the best choice for his clients. He also assists with continuity planning and exit strategies.
Greg regularly performs financial and tax physicals for prospective clients. These services include analyzing the financial position of a company and its selected tax methods. Areas of importance for the financial physical are working capital and equity, debt structure, bonding and licensing limits, gross profit, contract fade/gain analysis and percentage of completion calculations. The tax physical includes examining federal and state income tax returns and other state and local tax returns for proper preparation and implementation of deferrals and permanent tax differences. These physicals regularly produce large tax refunds from previous years and the strategies implemented produce significant tax savings in future years.
Greg has been published in The Journal of Construction Accounting and Taxation and the Construction Controller’s Manual. He also has taught continuing professional education to other CPAs in the construction industry on advanced accounting and tax issues for contractors. Since joining Davidson, Golden & Lundy in 1995, he has become active in various construction and accounting organizations.
Greg earned a master's of professional accountancy and bachelor's of professional accountancy from Mississippi State University.
